Case Story – Ministry of Energy / SEC — Product Certification Label (Sello SEC)
Context
In Chile, electrical and fuel-based products were historically labeled with multiple certification seals.
These seals varied in shape and format, making them difficult to recognize and understand. As a result, users lacked clear information about product safety, origin, and validity.
Challenge
The problem was not only complexity — it was invisibility.
People did not clearly understand what the certifications meant, nor how to identify whether a product was safe or compliant.
The challenge was to create a unified system that could be easily recognized, trusted, and understood by the general public.
Approach
We approached the problem by asking:
How can we make certification simple, visible, and meaningful in everyday life?
To address this, we:
- analyzed hundreds of certification systems worldwide
- evaluated technical feasibility and production costs
- studied user behavior and recognition patterns
At the same time, we identified a key opportunity:
a label placed on millions of products could become a powerful communication channel.
Solution
I designed a single, unified certification label for all regulated products.
The solution combined:
- a clear and recognizable visual identity
- a standardized format across all products
- integration with a digital platform
Each label includes a unique, scannable code that allows users to access detailed product information directly from their smartphones.
This project was recognized with a national innovation award in Chile, highlighting its impact in improving how people understand and interact with product certification. I was invited and travelled to USA to present the solution at CPSC (Washington) and UL (New York).
Result
The result was the successful implementation of the SEC Product Label — a system that:
- improved visibility and recognition of certified products
- provided accessible information about safety and compliance
- connected physical products with a digital information layer
Behind the label, a robust technological platform supports the generation and validation of each unique code.
Insight
Everyday objects can become powerful communication tools when information is clear, accessible, and integrated into people’s daily experience.
